What is Alpha-methylstyrene (AMS)?

Alpha-methylstyrene (AMS) is an intermediate chemical used in the manufacture of plasticizers, resins and polymerization production processes. A colorless liquid chemical, AMS is a co-product in the phenol production process of cumene oxidation.

Refined AMS is used to improve the impact and heat-resistant properties of certain polymers, particularly acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS), specialty grades of plastics, rubber and protective coatings. Consumers realize its benefits in products such as automobile components, tub/shower units, and sports equipment such as snow skis.

Manufacturing Information

Alpha-methylstyrene is manufactured at Sunoco’s Frankford (Philadelphia, PA) and Haverhill, OH plants. It is transported by railroad tankers, barges and tank trucks.
