What is Toluene?
Toluene is a chemical that occurs naturally in crude oil and is extracted during the
refining process. Toluene is used in many industrial processes and commercial products
from paint and printing inks to fabric coatings, artificial sweeteners, cosmetics,
flexible foams and automotive parts. Manufacturing Information
Toluene is manufactured at Sunoco's Marcus Hook,
PA, Eagle Point (Westville, NJ), and Toledo, OH refineries. Through a joint
venture partnership with Suncor Energy Inc., Sunoco Chemicals also markets toluene
produced at Suncor's Sarnia, Ontario, Canada
refinery. It is transported by truck, railcar and barge. Toluene is extracted from
reformate by the Udex process.
