What is Toluene?

Toluene is a chemical that occurs naturally in crude oil and is extracted during the refining process. Toluene is used in many industrial processes and commercial products from paint and printing inks to fabric coatings, artificial sweeteners, cosmetics, flexible foams and automotive parts.

Manufacturing Information

Toluene is manufactured at Sunoco's Marcus Hook, PA, Eagle Point (Westville, NJ), and Toledo, OH refineries. Through a joint venture partnership with Suncor Energy Inc., Sunoco Chemicals also markets toluene produced at Suncor's Sarnia, Ontario, Canada refinery. It is transported by truck, railcar and barge. Toluene is extracted from reformate by the Udex process.
